The Way We Were

Pensive

First Communion 1963?

Mem'ries,

Light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories
Of the way we were
Scattered pictures,
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were
Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we? Could we?
Mem'ries, may be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember...
The way we were...
The way we were...
The Way We Were,
Lyrics by Barbra Streisand

So...

My sister Carol was going through Mom's things and ran
across these antiquated photos of me.
Like most old pictures, they had no names or dates on the back.
I run across old photos like these all the time when I'm out thrifting and wonder,
who is this person, where were they from, what kind of life did they have?
It's sad really, no one will ever know who or when they were.
Well, I got busy putting info on the back of all the photos she sent me.
Can't have my photos floating about without any info,
people need to know who I am, who I was!!!

School and special event pictures are always fun to look at because
someone took the time to fix your hair and make sure you had decent clothes on
and generally looked presentable.
And isn't it funny how one year you think you're looking pretty good
and the next year your thinking OMG what happened???

8th grade 1966

Sophmore year 1968
Kind of like this one!!!
And I really thought I was stylin with that hair!
I like the First Communion one,
I wish my hair was still red like that, not this gray stuff.

1972- ish. Chicago beach

2010 Ren Fest with Nathan
I still feel young, my body doesn't hurt, no arthritis happening,
not too many wrinkles yet, generally feeling ok.
I was supposed to be wearing my glasses in all of these photos,
notice they only show up in one?

Looking over these photos I realize, I was a dreamy child,
not really connected to the real world.
Not much has changed in my 57 years!

Sometimes when I'm sad, I wonder,
what have you done, what have you accomplished,
will anyone remember you?

What about you?
How has your life been?

Till Next Time,
 Bonjour

You and I grew up about the same time, Terry. You are brave to share these photos. Most of mine, which my mom still has, are atrocious.

As far as accomplishments at this stage -- not even close. Still have so much I want to do, but will have to wait until the husband retires.

Thanks Brendie, I do love the Ren Fests.
You get to dress and be someone totally different.

Nancy, I'm sure yours aren't too bad, just look at how you turned out.

OMG! Me too, on showing the pics. I hated most of my pics over my entire life. It is rare that I find one I like of myself even today. That is why I have filled up my hard drive with way too many pics. I want to be able to pick and choose the best shot of anything I'm shooting. Especially of myself. You're a brave soul for posting yours,Terry, but I guess with age, we just don't care as much about trivial things, and past pics are indeed trivial, considering all we have endured to get to this point..

Cool photos! How fun! I'm glad you found these, and I'm glad you shared them! I agree that old anonymous photos are sad and seem lonely and need stories to explain who is in them. We should all get labeling before we miss our chance to be known!

I have old photos circa early 1900's. Don't know who the people are but
I framed them none-the-less.
They spoke to me.
Hopefully some day, my photos will speak to someone and be framed just for the hell of it.

And Amber, I'm sorry about the family wall, I really need to put it back up! I don't why I took it down in the first place???

Terry,
What a wonderful post. You are beautiful in every picture. I sometimes wonder what I will be remembered for, who will I impact? And I think that life doesn't have to be some big adventure, sometimes adventure is found in simple things and impact is found in the relationships we build while we are here. When I see old pics in thrift shops, I am sad too because I want to know how they ended up there and why they are not in albums that are treasured and passed down for generations to come. How have we become such a transient and temporary society that our family memories end up as thrift store finds?

It was wonderful to see you today if only for a short while. Have a wonderful week. And put those pics in a safe place for future generations :)

Love Tricha
